Winter Garden Facade in Brisbane by Studio 505

Inspired by the vibrant, luxuriant colours of a winter garden, Studio 505’s facade is a dynamic interplay between colour and technical sophistication

This project for the design of a facade combines techniques of cutting, folding and layering to create a complex, kaleidoscopic composition that animates the otherwise blank exterior of the Wintergarden shopping centre in Brisbane. Enveloping three sides of the building, the facade explores the concept of a wintergarden, inspired by its luxuriant biology and vibrant colours.

Every panel and layer in the 4,000 square metre construction is unique. Together they constitute a dynamic and expressive interplay between an expansive colour palette and a technically sophisticated language of cutting, scoring, folding and lighting. The outcome is a compelling visual experience that clearly identifies the centre within Brisbane’s urban milieu.

Exploded Facade

Facade composition

Developed following extensive prototyping, the facade is made up of four layers of steel and aluminium cladding attached to a primary steel frame. Different techniques of laser and water-jet cutting were employed to create the complex geometries of each layer. As the position and strength of the sun changes from day to day and season to season, so the folds, cuts and textures of the facade generate mutable patterns of light and shade. At night, an integrated lighting system set in the layered structure adds further animation, illuminating different seasonal tableaux throughout the hours of darkness. Communicating the rich diversity of life, the facade is a study of nature and applied ornament that is both radically experimental and seductively experiential.
