Training Centre for Sustainability by Anna Heringer, Chwiter, Morocco

Celebrating invention and authenticity, the AR presents a snapshot of work in progress from around the world

Both in its form and function, this new training centre in a suburb of Marrakesh celebrates indigenous building methods.Conceived as a forum for disseminating techniques of sustainable design, the centre is inspired by two familiar Moroccan archetypes: the rural ksar, as a compact locus of community life, and the urban madrasa for the education of students.

The outcome is a rich architecture of patios and gardens that lyrically counterpoints sun and shade, mass and lightness, roughness and refinement. Built from earth, it explores an ancient material rooted in local culture, while responding to aspirations of contemporary Moroccan society.
