Finland-based Rudanko + Kankkunen’s colourful school in Sra Pou village
What began as a project at Aalto University in 2010 not only led to the construction of this school in Cambodia, but also the founding of Rudanko + Kankkunen’s practice. Travelling to Cambodia, the pair met with a local NGO and decided the need was so urgent that they would both design and oversee the construction of a school in which the NGO would organise teaching. Using local materials and a local workforce, the construction in itself was intended as a learning process for those involved, teaching them techniques with which to build their own houses in the future. Colourful shutters over openings mark the facade and glow at night, while providing a shaded community space inside.
