Moving pictures: Whitehorse Manor Schools by Hayhurst and Co

AR School 2015 Winner: An atmospheric film of Hayhurst and Co’s extension to Whitehorse Manor Junior and Infant Schools

The AR School award celebrates the most exciting places of learning in the world. This year’s jury Sadie Morgan, Sam Jacob and Deyan Sudjic, with AR Executive Editor Emily Booth as chair, chose Hayhurst and Co’s extension to Whitehorse Manor schools as the winner of the AR School Awards 2015.

A collage of new forms attached to a Victorian school, Hayhurst and Co’s project brings a new masterplan to the site, transforming the school buildings into an educational community. The judges praised both its material beauty and its spatial configuration, transforming and updating the old ideas of what a school should be that had defined the existing buildings.

The judges’ comments

Sadie Morgan: ‘The winner is a very beautiful project. They’ve looked at the narrative, the journey of the schoolchild. I found the level of detail and critical thinking really impressive.’

Deyan Sudjic: ‘It’s a wonderful piece of embroidery – somewhere that feels a good place to learn and go. It’s giving the young people the sense that education matters.’

Sam Jacob: ‘As an addition to a Victorian school, the interventions have transformed what is an old idea of a school and what education is into something that feels incredibly contemporary, and incredibly liberating.’
