Michael Ong’s house in Australia attempts to envelop the garden space, making it active rather that passive
The first house by Michael Ong and his design office (MODO) displays a thoughtful site strategy and sense of materiality. Rather than opt for the usual approach of filling out the site with a garden at the back, Ong attempts to merge the garden and living spaces, fulfilling the client’s request for a house that would play an active role in their life. Drawing the backyard space inward creates what Ong refers to as a ‘cave’ between the interior and exterior, taking the form of a deep timber clad reveal in which a glass door sits.
