Celebrating invention and authenticity, the AR presents a snapshot of work in progress from around the world
This new city mortuary and offices for the state pathologist are set in suburban parkland at Marino in north Dublin. During the 18th century, the park was developed in the Picturesque tradition. Although the landscape is much changed, the Casino, an exquisite Neo-classical stone pavilion by William Chambers, remains.
Described by its architect as ‘a place of stillness and sadness’, the mortuary is contained within a series of courtyards, pools and walled gardens. The intimate spaces provide privacy for grieving relatives while also dignifying the building’s investigative and archival functions. The green chessboard of the roof is cultivated as a secret landscape.
