‘They are not like suburban housing,’ says Peter Salter, describing this scheme for a quartet of houses in London’s Notting Hill. ‘They are quite cellular, like pueblo dwellings.’ The antithesis of their orthogonal Victorian surroundings, the irregular, three-storey houses are arranged around a central courtyard.

Pod-like living areas are placed on the top floor, with reception and dining spaces at ground level and bedrooms in-between. In an intricate plan, inspired by the spatial complexity of Sir John Soane’s Museum, light is captured and funnelled through lightscoops, partly enclosed shafts lined with sumptuous turquoise paint.
