Christine Murray promoted to Editor-in-Chief of The AR and Architects' Journal

Christine Murray, current editor of The Architectural Review, has been promoted to Editor-in-Chief. In this new role, she will stand at the helm of both The Architectural Review (AR) and its UK sister title, the Architects’ Journal (AJ)

‘I’m delighted to be taking on the role of Editor-in-Chief of the AJ in addition to AR – two of the architecture industry’s most valued and influential voices,’ says Murray, who was appointed Editor of the AR in March 2015, and previously edited the AJ for five years from 2010-15, where she founded the Women in Architecture Awards.

Murray also announced her editorial strategy which includes the launch of a redesigned print edition of the AJ to be published fortnightly while The AR remains at its current print frequency. Both brands are to evolve digitally, with The AR developing ‘a richer digital experience including archive pieces, documentary film, as well as a programme of live events.’ The AR launched a new website in December and has started producing podcasts and documentary film.

‘It is my responsibility to usher in a new chapter for these two historic brands, not only as a caretaker of their 120-year-old legacy, but ensuring they evolve and progress in this time of change in the publishing industry,’ Murray says.

‘We’ve carefully assessed, and will continue to assess, the changing digital habits of our readership and the increased demands of producing daily content to ensure we are providing the right coverage on the right platform at the right time. Listening to the market, it’s clear that some subscribers value print for its unparalleled presentation of buildings through drawings and photography.

‘Both the AJ and the AR will develop new digital products and events under this new structure, maintaining dedicated staff and distinct identities, while benefitting from the shared expertise and knowledge of both teams as they continue to evolve across print, digital, awards and live events.’

Chief executive of Plexus, Natasha Christie-Miller said, ‘Christine has been an enormously successful editor at EMAP and now Plexus for the last 6 years, first leading the AJ to consistent subscription growth and more recently leading AR. Christine has a wonderful ability to provide essential information as well as surprises to her loyal subscribers, constantly evolving the content offering across digital, print and face-to-face.’
