AZ Groeninge Hospital by Baumschlager Eberle

The main drivers in the design of this enormous complex were the desires to integrate it with its parkland setting and to break it down to a human scale.

The architect has achieved this through the creation of five interconnected blocks, which can act as self-sufficient modules and are arranged around courtyards with individual characters. This complex follows the contemplative model of healing, treating the hospital as a place for recovery and peace, with a certain deliberate withdrawal from the hurly burly of the city. The homogeneous facades provide a sense of harmony, while appearing different when seen from varying angles.
