The Big Rethink Part 9: Rethinking Architectural Education


Footnote 1. Subjects I addressed long ago in ‘What is Wrong with Architectural Education? Almost Everything’, AR July 1989. Little has changed. I couldn't agree more. I was failed at the end of third year in 1989 and was prompted to write a book called the Appeal of Architecture because I discovered myself that little had changed in two decades. The only change seem to be a massive increase in the number of students been admitted to the schools during a period when the number of jobs in architectural firms have been in continual decline. Since publishing my book (two weeks ago), former students of architecture have already been in touch sharing their traumatic experiences with me. It’s harrowing to listen to. This is the response I was expecting. The complaints are always the same – the architecture departments don't test on what they teach (which is very little). One boy experienced 3 hours of Autocad tuition in his first year - and that was it. Students have always taught themselves. Also, there is no fair methodical system of marking project work and if a tutor doesn't like/rate a student’s final design project then they are failed without question causing much financial and mental distress. It’s not difficult to change some of these things. Go to a good university and see how a real, academic subject is taught and marked. In 70 years architecture, the departments of architecture have operated like no other. In their current form they are not safe places for young people to be.
