Peter Zumthor’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion opens to a hushed crowd in Kensington Gardens

‘This project is an experiment about how a garden can fight against the noise of the city,’ said Peter Zumthor at the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion press conference. The architect had asked the gallery to turn off the noisy generator powering the unnecessary public address system to let the birds and bees be heard in his bituminous black Hortus Conclusus.
