This image forms part of an eight-panel folding screen, which is mounted with paintings depicting a royal banquet held in 1848 (Musin Year, Joseon dynasty), the 14th year of King Heonjong’s reign. The banquet celebrates the 60th birthday of Queen Sunwon, the king’s grandmother, and the 41st birthday of his mother, Queen Sinjeong. Paintings of royal banquets such as this were produced to foster political stability by highlighting the proper way to govern people and promoting the Confucian virtues of filial piety and respect for one’s elders.
