A new era begins at The Architectural Review as Christine Murray takes the helm
Christine Murray has been appointed Editor of The Architectural Review. Murray, who was formerly Editor of The Architects’ Journal has today taken up the position and will lead the title as it evolves across print and digital publishing.
Murray has led The Architects’ Journal for five years and is known for having returned the title to subscription growth after decades of decline. Under her tenure, The Architects’ Journal won IBP Magazine of the Year for this first time in the award’s 30-year history. Murray also founded the Women in Architecture Awards.
Murray becomes the 15th Editor and only the second woman to lead the 119-year-old publication and joins an illustrious lineage of critics who have held the role including Hubert de Cronin Hastings, Nikolaus Pevsner, Peter Davey and most recently Catherine Slessor.
Slessor, who edited the AR for the previous five years said of the appointment, ‘I’m delighted that Christine Murray has succeeded me as Editor of the AR and wish her well in her quest to keep it at the forefront of global critical debate. It’s an extremely exciting time for the AR as it develops new digital offerings and strives to be a compelling, propositional force that makes a genuine difference to the world. I’m sure she will respond brilliantly to these challenges and impel the AR to fly even higher.’
Murray said it was a ‘dream to be named the new editor of The Architectural Review’ commenting, ‘I have some big shoes to fill. I look forward to continuing Catherine Slessor’s good work and building on the AR’s fine tradition in print while expanding its digital coverage.’
Current Editorial Director Paul Finch, who himself edited the AR in the early 21st century, congratulated Murray on her appointment remarking, ‘The dawn of a new editorial regime is an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of the past, while relishing possibilities for a diverse future. Like architects, editors are engaged with creative possibility, and that is the spirit in which Christine Murray can nurture the AR in a transformed media world.’
