The University of Namibia (UNAM) has launched an open international competition to expand its remote Katima Mulilo campus (Deadline: 26 September)
Supported by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, the competition seeks a masterplan and conceptual proposals for new eco-friendly facilities on a 33 hectare plot overlooking the Zambezi river.
Planned to complete in 2022, the project will expand the Katima Mulilo campus, which currently hosts around 700 students and specialises in wildlife management, eco-tourism and animal health.

Founded in 1935, Katima Mulilo is located in the extreme north-east of Namibia within the Caprivi region, famous for its dense wildlife population.
The university, which is based in the Namibian capital Windhoek, was set up 24 years ago and has 660 staff and 10,400 students across 11 urban and rural campuses.
The Katima Mulilo outpost was formed when the Caprivi College of Education joined the university’s Faculty of Education in 1996.
Two years ago a pair of new lecture halls were completed on the rural campus, which has seen overall student numbers grow more than 50 per cent in recent years.
According to the contract notice: ‘The contract will be awarded to an independent consultant firm or a consortium of two or three partners with proven experience in architectural design, building management and development of tertiary level learning.
‘Ideally, the consultant should have experience in wildlife management and ecotourism in the region of southern Africa, and a minimum annual turnover of €1.2 million.’
The winning team will also help develop a revised curriculum for the new facility featuring ‘innovative training and teaching components’ and international research activities.

How will your African University of Creative Arts project create a specialist learning centre for Nigeria?
Our client’s vision for the African University of the Creative Arts in Lagos, Nigeria, is for an environment that supports interdisciplinary study and the celebration of African art and culture. No dedicated arts and humanities university or combined learning place of this type exists in the whole of Africa. Our proposal hopes to create not simply an education campus but a new destination with regenerative potential rooted in the location.
What issues are important when designing a specialist campus for a dramatic natural location in Africa?
Our proposals for AUCA are, at a deep and fundamental level, inspired by the existential coastal landscape and climate of west Africa. Our contextual studies have informed our architectural proposals at all levels, from our pattern of structural design through to our consideration of the buildings’ unique aspect and orientation with reference to prevailing winds and views.
How would you set about designing an expansion to the University of Namibia’s Katima Mulilo campus?
Our approach would be start with the learner. It is our practice view that the learning experience for a single student is the key generative consideration in education projects. All other considerations, though potentially important, remain secondary to a learner’s wellbeing. Very simply, a student’s academic attainment is boosted by their ability to enjoy their learning, notably a feature our own UK government fails to recognise. Combining progressive curriculum with progressive learning space promotes doubly good outcomes.
