Competition: Residential Stadium, New York

An open international ideas contest has been announced to integrate new housing into the McCarren Park sports track in Brooklyn, New York City (Deadline: 21 November)

The competition seeks innovative ideas to transform the historic sports field into a new multi-use football stadium featuring residential units for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted in United States, Canada and Mexico.

The call for concepts aims to promote debate over the future of major events stadiums following the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia which saw major construction works carried out for 11 of the 12 arenas. The contest aims to generate new long-term strategies to transform stadiums into multi-use sites benefitting local communities.

According to the brief: ‘Have you ever thought about what happens when Olympic arenas, World Cup stadiums or other costly sporting venues close at the end of the colourful events for which they were designed?

‘Archstorming is calling for proposals to design an adaptive stadium that could also be used as a residential building. By reusing an existing structure within a site, the energy required to create these spaces is lessened, as is the material waste that comes from destroying old sites and rebuilding using new materials.’

Founded in 1906, McCarren Park is a 14-hectare public green space stretching between Williamsburg and Greenpoint in Brooklyn. The park hosts both a running track and the recently restored McCarren Park Pool and Play Centre.

The ideas contest focuses on the park’s running track and invites participants to propose a new multi-use football stadium on the site featuring a playing surface, spectator stands, residential units ranging from 30m² to 100m², offices shops, commercial spaces, public toilets, and new public realm.
