Yenikapi Transfer Point

Big Urban Projects Winner: Yenikapi Transfer Point and Archaeo Park by Melkan Gursel & Murat Tabanlioglu, Turkey

Winner

Project: Yenikapi Transfer Point and Archaeo Park Area
Location: Istanbul, Turkey
Architect: Melkan Gursel & Murat Tabanlioglu
Client: Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality

During the excavation of this Istanbul underground transit system nexus, archaeologists uncovered the 1600-year-old port of Theodosius including the remains of 35 antique ships plus a much earlier Neolithic settlement. These are to be displayed in a new museum in the Archaeo Park in which the transit development is situated. The scheme has extensive car parking and the various layers of public piazzas are sheltered by a series of semi-permeable roofs.

The judges commented, ‘This is a gigantic infrastructure project which has been ingeniously incorporated into a previously urban context. Architectural skill has been applied both above and below ground.’
