Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

Old & New Winner: Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) by Rice + Lipka Architects and James Corner Field Operations, USA

Winner

Project: Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD)
Location: Detroit, Michigan, USA
Architect: Rice + Lipka Architects / James Corner Field Operations
Client: MOCAD

The raw, industrial character of a former car dealership building has been preserved in this 708m2 addition. It includes a new rooftop pavilion which works both as an event space and as an independent structural colonnade defining this new culture hub. Support spaces such as loading, prep, shop and administration are in addition to upgraded exhibition space, bookshop and café functions.

The judges said this was: ‘An inspirational project that combines past and present in a well resolved and convincing manner. It creates new space for new creativity in a post-industrial city.’

Museum for Architectural Drawing

Project: Museum for Architectural Drawings
Location: Germany
Architect: Sergei Tchoban & Sergey Kuznetsov
Client: Tchoban Foundation

This 498m2, four-storey building has the appearance of a stack of staggered and angled solid cuboid volumes with a glass penthouse
on top. Openings on the ground and the first floor are formed as recesses generating an entrance niche and a loggia. Rear openings on second and fourth floors have flush glazing serving the function of conservatory walls. Flush glazing contributes to the sensation of a huge concrete body.

The judges were confident that: ‘When completed this museum will be a building any designer will want to visit.’
