D Hotel in Lucknow, India by Sanjay Puri

Leisure Winner: D Hotel by Sanjay Puri, Lucknow, India

Project: D Hotel
Location: India
Architect: Sanjay Puri
Client: Dayal Fort Hotels Ltd

This 28,600m2, 120-room hotel separates its main functions - conferencing, banqueting and hotel rooms - each element having its own outdoor spaces. Entered through a 10m-high elevated lobby, it faces north into a large landscaped garden with each of its restaurants opening onto terraces or gardens in this 13,400m2 site. Local temperatures range from 13oC to 46oC so that south (and sun) facing elevations have minimal openings.

The judges noted: ‘Mass is convincingly broken down by the use of geometry which celebrates arrival and occupation via elegant spaces which provide identity without bombast’.

Leisure Commended:

Musée de la Romanitée Narbonne

Project: Musée de la Romanitée
Location: France
Architect: Foster + Partners
Client: La Region Amenagement LRA

Set adjacent to the Canal de la Robine at the entrance to the city of Narbonne, this 8m high, 8800m2 single-storey building contains exhibition galleries, a multimedia education centre and library with administration, restoration and storage facilities plus an amphitheatre for open-air events. The centrepiece of the museum is a collection of more than 1000 ancient stone relief funerary blocks excavated nearby. The judges thought the project: ‘Refreshingly “traditional” Modernist architecture which combines functionalism with a sense of calm.’
