AUTOPIA Shopping Auto Mall

Retail Winner: AUTOPIA Shopping Auto Mall in Istanbul by Gokhan Avcioglu & Dara Kirmizitoprak

Project: Autopia
Location: Turkey
Architect: Gokhan Avcioglu & Dara Kirmizitoprak
Client: Kelesoglu Gul Insaat

This three-storey plus two-level basement building is a shopping mall for cars. Space has been expanded to accommodate the automobile, with 6m floor-to-ceiling heights and capacious spans, an 800m test track around the top of building and 470 storefronts, most reachable by car. Of them, 56 are food and drink shops, cafés and restaurants with auto-galleries representing 443 automotive brands.

The judges were impressed with: ‘This thoroughly thought-out project which makes the business of car-buying a pleasure rather than a chore. Convincingly integrated ancillary uses add to the story.’

Retail Commended:

Craft Market, Arkitekturværkstedet

Project: Craft Market
Location: Mali
Architect: Arkitekturværkstedet
Client: The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Carried out with local groups and the Danish Centre for Culture, the inspiration for this local craft market and trade centre compound is the town’s own vernacular architecture. A largely concrete construction, it runs around the perimeter of the site and is covered in murals and a local render known as tadelakt. It contains workshops, shops, administration offices, a community space and a first-floor restaurant.

The judges thought it was: ‘Simple and effective. This delightful proposal introduces formal organisation to an informal economy.’
