Shortlist for AR Pop-up Awards announced

From a floating sauna to a spiky pavilion, the temporary structures vying for the £3,000 prize have been revealed

Studio Tom Emerson, Hudson Architects, Sebatian Irarrazaval and Hollwich Kushner are among the ten finalists in the running for the inaugural AR award.

Pop-up celebrates temporary structures from around the world built in the past five years and carries a £3,000 prize fund for the winning project.

Considering the 155 entries from around the world, the judging panel included Christine Murray editor-in-chief of the Architects’ Journal and The Architectural Review, architect David Kohn, AR executive editor Emily Booth and AR assistant editor Jon Astbury.

Murray said the judges began with a lively discussion on ‘what represents excellence in this emerging and popular type of building.’

‘We determined that we were looking for a piece of architecture that offered a spatial experience, preferably an experimental one. We also sought a structure that was somehow, through its materiality or sense of humour, aware of its own temporary nature, even celebrating it. We also decided that pop-ups should be theatrical, but not superficially so – it should enter into dialogue with its permanent context and somehow challenge or disrupt it.’

Murray said the judges were also seeking a pop-up that had managed to make a wider impact extending beyond its short lifespan. ‘We wanted to feel as though there would be a sense of loss or a lasting imprint when it was gone.’

The winner of AR Pop-up will be announced in late January, awarded the £3,000 cash prize and published in the February edition of The Architectural Review.
