Nikolaus Pevsner
Nikolaus Pevsner was born in Germany in 1902, and later moved to Britain where he remained for remained for the rest of his life, thoroughly embedded in its architectural community.
From 1936 onwards he was a frequent contributor to The Architectural Review, and stood in as the magazine’s editor from 1943 to 1945 while JM Richards was on active service. He is best known for his 46-volume series of county-by-county guides, The Buildings of England (1951-74); and his other acclaimed books include Pioneers of Modern Design (1949), An Outline of European Architecture (1943), and A History of Building Types (1976). He was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge (1949-55) and was knighted in 1969
