JM Richards
James Maude Richards was born at Epsom, Surrey, in 1907. Educated at Cambridge University, he trained as an architect at the Architectural Association, but his main career was as a writer on architecture
He served as AR editor from 1937 to 1971, the longest and perhaps most influential tenure of any of its editors. He wrote several books including An Introduction to Modern Architecture (1940), Eight Hundred Years of Finnish Architecture (1978) and Memoirs of an Unjust Fella (1980). Knighted for services to architecture, he died in London in 1992.
