Katsumi Hayakawa's Paper Sculptures
Cityscapes made out of paper by Tokyo-based artist Katsumi Hayakawa
Tokyo-based artist makes three-dimensional architectural paper sculptures using just paper and glue. In his work, the artist distills modern urban fabric to a few elements. The city is read as a series of objects, extruded at different heights. Hayakawa’s sculptures resemble dense, chaotic cities, such as Tokyo.
Various patterns, shapes and volumes emerge from large, abstract pieces. Individual fragments, however, are meticulously handcrafted. There is a certain sense of fragility about them, emphasised by the lack of colour.
