Five installations made by students and residents in Germany

Staggered over eight months (1 April to 30 November 2010) the students and local residents are introducing interventions into the urban fabric of Sesslach in the state of Bavaria, which aim to change the perception of this ancient town. Professor Maria Aubock’s aim in establishing this project was for the ‘students to articulate modern position on art in public spaces: to lean, to reflect, to understand and to shape the environment.’

Three of the five projects have now been completed. Martin Lersch, with the help of the locals, learnt the art of weaving by building willow pergolas, which established a new public congregation area in front of the town hall. Sven Hedrich placed steel sculptural viewing points across the town to ‘view the architectural highlights of the ancient city.’ Eva Chmel created an avenue of red banners bearing the names of locals, which trace between the buildings of the historical centre. Still to be executed are a sound instillation, grandly titled the Sound of Life, and a sculptural intervention, Light Boxes.
