Eastern Design Office’s latest Japanese bar

The district of Gion in Kyoto, Japan, is known for entertainment and has long been associated with geishas. However, this design by Eastern Design Office has swapped the traditions of tea ceremony and Kabuki for the modern Japanese craze of karaoke. Squeezed between traditional buildings of a typical city street, the design of the karaoke bar is a clean white box, punctured by meandering slits through the facade, which simultaneously hide and reveal the interior’s activities. ‘The form of the slit is to be the figure of a dancing woman bending her body,’ say the designers. ‘The mysteriousness of its form should resemble something invisible which lives in darkness and in clouds.’
