Internships at The Architectural Review

The Architectural Review is looking for enthusiastic architectural students and graduates to join its editorial team as part of its internship programme

The Architectural Review is the world’s leading international architecture magazine. Since being founded in 1896, AR has striven to place itself at the vanguard of architectural culture and production. Yet even through the long perspective of our own history, it is clear we have reached a critical moment for architecture. For this reason the October edition of the magazine relaunches the AR to tackle these issues more rigorously.

AR Interns will join AR at this very exciting time in its history. The successful applicant will contribute to implementing and sustaining our ambitious editorial vision, working across both our print and online offerings.

The placements are for three-month periods, although we may consider shorter durations for exceptional candidates. Up to three months in architectural journalism can form part of your PEDR quarterly record, which goes towards your professional qualification as an architect.

This is an unpaid part-time position, but we will fund travel and living expenses up to £10 a day for the days you are in the office. Successful candidates will learn an enormous amount about architectural journalism. You will work closely with the editorial team on specific self-starting projects, feeding content from around the world into both the magazine and the website.

Applications are open for 2012 including the summer university recess. Even if you cannot begin immediately, we welcome applications for future positions.

Interested candidates should send a CV and a short statement (200 words or under) about why you’d like to work at the AR, alongside up to five examples of your architectural work. Please email phineas.harper@emap.com or write to:

WHAT OUR PREVIOUS INTERNS HAVE TO SAY…

‘Interning at the AR was a baptism of fire - in the best possible way. I immediately felt part of the team and after a very short time. I was busy picture researching, writing news stories and being sent along to press conferences and exhibitions. I learned so much and couldn’t have asked for a more fulfilling placement.’
Jess Bowie, Graduate, City University Magazine Journalism course

‘My internship at the AR was extremely fun and rewarding. It was a steep learning curve, but it was made easy and enjoyable by the people we worked with. The office was a great place to have my first experience of magazine work, with a variety of day-to-day tasks and the chance to write both online and printed articles. Everyone was willing to help, and answer any questions.

It gave me a good chance to catch up on all the most recent developments in the architectural world (crucial for my course)and it was brilliant to be able to view London Design Week and London Fashion week from the ‘inside’!
Ione Braddick, 3rd Year Architecture student, University of Cambridge
